General Information on Mini-Tachs
Q. What applications is the Mini-Tach designed for?
A. The Mini-Tach is designed specifically for all 1967 and 1968 standard Mustang instrument clusters to replace the existing blank (crosshairs) or clock.
Q. Should I purchase a 6000 or 8000 RPM Mini-Tach?
A. This will depend on your engine build, however it should be noted that the Mini-Tach cannot be damaged by over-reving (over scale). The 8000 is very popular, but if you are not frequently exceeding 6000 RPM, the 6000 tach may be the better choice. The 6000 also has a less compressed scale and is therefore easier to read.
Q. Do you produce a Mini-Tach for a 6 cylinder vehicle?
A. Not at this point. We have had a few enquiries but not enough demand to warrant production. This, of course, can change at any time and it may be viable in the future.
Q. Are the Mini-Tachs available with white dials?
Not as yet. We have had many enquiries, and it is quite possible we will be producing these sooner rather than later!
Q. How do the Mini-Tachs illuminate?
A. Separate illumination is not required. The tach is illuminated with the existing blue filtered dash lights, just as an original clock would be if fitted.
General Installation Questions
Q. Do I need to cut the dash to install the Mini-Tach?
A. No. The Mini-Tach is a bolt in deal. It simply replaces the existing blank or clock with no modification whatsoever. The originality of your dash is unaffected.
Q. Is wiring supplied with the Mini-Tach?
No. We choose not to supply wiring because it is readily available consumable. Also, many customers have their own preferences i.e. colours, termination, custom harnessing, etc.
Q. Are the Mini-Tachs compatible with contact breaker points replacement modules?
A. The Mini-Tach is compatible with the Pertronix® Ignitor™. Other systems may be compatible. Check with the systems manufacturer for specifications.
Q. Are the Mini-Tachs compatible with after-market electronic ignition systems?
A. Most after-market electronic ignition systems are fitted with a tach output drive. In the event that this output does not operate the Mini-Tach, an additional adaptor (amplifier or signal booster) may be required. Please check with the manufacturer of the ignition system for the correct adaptor to suit your application. You will require an adaptor for a voltage triggered tachometer.
Q. How easy is the Mini-Tach to wire?
A. Very easy. A general understanding of your Mustang's electrical system, some basic hand tools and an assortment of wire and terminals is all that is required.
Q. What supplies the signal for the Mini-Tach?
A. The Mini-Tach is voltage triggered and is sensed from the negative side of the coil. If the coil is unmarked, it is the same terminal that is connected to the distributor (condenser).
Q. Do I need to connect a ground wire to the Mini-Tach?
A. A separate ground terminal is fitted but will only need to be connected if there is not a good ground (negative) on the instrument cluster. This can be checked with a multimeter.
Q. Do I need a fuse?
A. Yes. A fuse on the 12VDC input (feed) is a must. A 3 amp fuse is recommended but providing the fuse is rated less than the wire size (current rating), it will be OK.
